OVERVIEW
The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) was established in May, 1974. It is a Public university in Islamabad.
After the huge success of Open University in United Kingdom, in May, 1974 (AIOU) was established as a Public
Open university in Islamabad. The university’s (AIOU) main objective is to provide “Education to All”. To provide
educational opportunities to those who cannot leave their homes and jobs for full time studies.
ESTABLISHMENT
The university was initially named as People’s Open University but was renamed as Allama Iqbal Open University in 1977 after the name of the National poet of Pakistan, Allama Muhammad Iqbal. The main reason behind opening an Open University was to provide quality and distant education to masses who cannot leave their homes or jobs for full time studies. To provide part time educational facilities, an Open university will provide education through Online Tutorials, Seminars, Workshops, Television Lectures, Radio Broadcasts and other Mass Communication sources.
Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is the world’s fourth largest institution and according to 2010 it enrolls
1,120,400 students annually with a greater number of female candidates. The mission of Distance education has
greater acceptance in Pakistan due to several factors such as poverty, poor and low quality educational system in distant and rural areas, some parents in remotest areas do not let their daughters go out of home to get education.
The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), through its system of Distance education is serving and providing
quality education to those housebound girls and women. This is the reason why most of the candidates in (AIOU)
are females. The education is either free or very economical so those who cannot afford education in other highly
expensive universities can easily get them selves educated from Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU).
OBJECTIVE
Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is affiliated with Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) with
a Motto of “Education for All”. The university is providing education to people without any discrimination. The main goal of the university to provide education to people even in the farthest and remotest areas of Pakistan who cannot go to university on a daily basis.
The University (AIOU) is the best option for people who cannot afford to get education in expensive private universities of Pakistan. Online learning is offered either free or at a minimal cost. The university (AIOU) is located in Islamabad, Pakistan. The university has 9 regional campuses,33 regional centres , 41 approved study centres (where students and teachers can have face to face programs) and 138 part-time regional co-ordinating centres throughout Pakistan.
